Ornaments As Art …

The late Thomas Glenn was a contemporary artist whose imagination on canvas was often reflected in his ornament designs. What does this style evoke for you? I see Mid-Century

“Teal Squared” (TG724) from Thomas Glenn Holidays, $32.99

colors that I grew up with … or perhaps boldly colored pocket squares peeking from a businessman’s otherwise austere black suit. How about you?

Almost home from Germany …

Bamberg, Germany hosts an incredible annual flea market on German Unification Day.

Even five years ago, who would have ever thought that I could post this blog while flying high over the Atlantic Ocean on my way home from Germany.  It has been a jam-packed 12 days of incredible museums, wonderful food and new cultural experiences.  While there were many highlights, as an ornament and holiday collector, visits to the Rautis Czech ornament workshop along with the annual Bamberg Flea Markets were A+ experiences.  I will post much more but my laptop is just about out of power.  So, just adding a few images to this post with many more to come.

Bamberg is filled with historic architecture, quaint plazas and charming cobblestone streets and sidewalks.
Here are some German reflectors with liquid-filled centers. They really “sparkle” on the tree. I was so pleased that the rain cleared in the early afternoon and tables were uncovered once more. What a great flea market find!

Thomas Glenn Halloween!

New Styles from Soffieria De Carlini

The Krampus Tradition …

St Nicholas and Krampus

If you are a child in southern Germany or Austria, when St.

Nicholas rides through your village on the evening of December 5, he does not arrive alone. Krampus is his scary companion.

The Krampus, a terrifying horned figure wearing chains and carrying switches, runs behind him. It’s his job to scare children into being “good.”

Krampus ornament

The Soffieria De Carlini Krampus ornament depicts a classic German orAustrian Krampus clad in black with a scary red face, horns and elongated tongue. And, don’t miss that tail. He is truly a frightening character … as bad as St. Nicholas is saintly!

Soffieria De Carlini has been a family-operated glass blowning working shop since 1947.  Located near Milan, the De Carlinis are the last workshop in Italy still producing these whimsical free blown holiday ornaments.
